The specialty Puka Dogs in Poipu were pretty awesome and endemic to Kauai
They were just getting ready to open another store in Waikiki

Since it looked rainy on the north side of the island, we went south to Waimea Canyon

Looks just like a little Grand Canyon!

Grayson at the canyon

Darby at the canyon

Mark and Jonna

Great picture of the kids

A little further into the canyon the fog rolled in and was beautiful

After exploring the Waimea State Park we explored Jo-Jo's Shave Ice
...supposed to be the best on the island!

We found a desolate beach and the kids made a fort while we relaxed

Grayson looks like a dog here digging!

We stayed at the Marriott in Lihue overnight

The property as being renovated, but it was still really nice

Our view from our room

The pool was gorgeous

The kids hanging by this restaurant surfboard ad!
We went there for dinner!

The kids got in a late swim before heading to dinner

While we were eating dinner a major storm rolled through and we had to
dash back to the hotel in the pouring rain!

Today we headed to the north side of the island toward Hanalei
Jonna went into the store to get directions and came out with jewelry!

This side of the island is so lush and beautiful

So far my favorite area of Hawaii

Jonna and the kids explore this cave

Getting started on the Kalalua Trail...

So far so good, but a little muddy

It is over rocks and uphill...

The views are proving to be well worth it!

The path is right on the edge of the cliff down to the Pacific

It doesn't look very muddy here, but it was a bit slippery

The kids posing by a waterfall... this side of the island gets tons of rain each year

Jonna and Mark pause on the trail

How did Darby end up with two walking sticks?

The colors are s vivid

Jonna and Darby need a rest

This trail is the only way the north and south sides of the island
connect on the east side

The trail runs the 11 miles to the road that
ends on the south side of the island

The people on the beach below are too small to see!

Just to prove it was a bit muddy on the trail

We saw this t-shirt in a shop after our hike...

Last chance for provisions before the trailhead...
we circled back afterwards for some drinks and snacks

We grabbed a burrito at Red Hot Mamas after our hike

We headed back a short distance to Hanalei Bay
Darby and Grayson love sand between their toes!

Kauai 2010

We loved this cute church in the town of Hanalei

This island looks like paradise
